Tsunami Preparedness at Del Norte Unified School District
Tsunami Emergency Procedures: What Parents Need to Know
In the event of a tsunami warning, it is essential to follow these procedures to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
All Schools: Key Parent Guidance

Do Not Come to the School:
Whether your child’s school is in or outside the evacuation zone, do not attempt to pick up your child during a tsunami warning. Increased traffic and disruptions can delay emergency responses and put everyone at greater risk.- For schools outside the evacuation zone, students are safest sheltering in place.
- For schools inside the evacuation zone, students will already have been evacuated to a designated safety zone.

Trust the Protocols:
All schools in the district have established safety plans developed with emergency experts. These plans prioritize the safety of every student and staff member. -
Stay Informed:
Updates will be provided through the district’s emergency notification system. Ensure your contact information is current with your child’s school to receive timely updates.
Schools Outside the Tsunami Evacuation Zones in the Safe Zone
The following schools are located in safe zones and will shelter in place during a tsunami warning:
- Bess Maxwell Elementary School
- Del Norte High School
- Mary Peacock Elementary School
- Crescent Elk Middle School
- Joe Hamilton Elementary School
- Mountain Elementary School
- Pine Grove Elementary School
- Redwood Elementary School
- Smith River Elementary School
- Sunset High School
- Castle Rock Charter School
- Del Norte Community School
Protocols for These Schools:
- Students and staff will remain at school, where it is safe, until the warning is lifted.
- Emergency procedures, including shelter-in-place protocols, will be followed.
- Parents will be notified when it is safe to resume regular activities or begin reunification if necessary.
Schools Inside the Tsunami Evacuation Zones
The following schools are located within the tsunami evacuation zones and will evacuate during a tsunami warning:
- ‘O Me-nok Learning Center: 300 Minot Creek Rd, Klamath, CA 95548
- Evacuation Site: Across Minot Creek Road, south of the school, and up the hillside.
- Uncharted Shores Academy (USA) Main Campus: 330 E Street, Crescent City, CA 95531
- Evacuation Site: First Baptist Church, 1295 G Street, Crescent City.
Protocols for These Schools:
- Students and staff will evacuate immediately to the designated safety zone under the guidance of school staff and emergency responders.
- After evacuation, reunification will take place at a designated site, and parents will be notified when and where it is safe to pick up their children.
- No students will be released until it is safe, and the reunification process is underway.
